Built in 1856, the Dubuque Shot Tower was used for making lead shot and bullets and remained in commercial use for three years. It was later used as a watchtower by a lumber company to guard against fire. Fire destroyed the interior woodwork and the top in 1911, and citizens of Dubuque restored it in 1961.
