South Haven Light marks the south pier where the Black River enters Lake Michigan and has guided navigation since 1872. The present cast-iron tower, designed by James G. Warren, replaced an earlier wooden lighthouse and was completed in 1903, using a lantern room brought from Muskegon after forty years of service. Its original catwalk still links the tower to shore and is one of only four surviving examples in Michigan. In 1913 the tower was moved 425 feet to the pier’s end. The original keeper’s house also survives and, after transfer to the city and renovation, became the Marialyce Canonie Great Lakes Research Library.
