Fort Phantom Hill was established on November 14, 1851 by the United States Army to protect settlers against the Indians. It was abandoned and burned on April 6, 1854. It was repaired and used by Southern Overland Mail from 1858 to 1861, served as a sub-post of Fort Griffin from 1871 to 1872, and was the temporary county seat of Jones County in 1881.
