Abbott Farm Historic District in central New Jersey covers about 2,000 acres of marshlands and bluffs along the Delaware River floodplain and ranks among the state’s most important prehistoric landscapes. It includes the largest known Middle Woodland village of its type on the East Coast, with evidence of repeated occupation over a long period, including by Paleoindian people, and main village habitation between 500 BC and 500 AD. The area gained modern archaeological importance through Charles Conrad Abbott’s 1876 discoveries, which sparked debate about the region’s earliest inhabitants and influenced North American archaeology. Its significance also connects prehistoric remains with later historic sites in the same landscape.
