Breakheart Reservation is a 652-acre state park in Saugus and Wakefield, Massachusetts, with forests, lakes, the Saugus River, and rocky hilltops overlooking the Boston area. Human use of the land reaches back to Paleo-Indian times, and in 1666 John Gifford established an iron works there that closed in 1675. Later industries included mills and wire manufacturing, and an 1814 fieldstone milldam survives. In the 1890s the land was assembled into the private Breakheart Hill Forest estate, where ponds were created and cabins and a farm were added. Publicly acquired in 1934, it was improved by the Civilian Conservation Corps and opened in 1936 as a recreation area and wildlife refuge.
