White Pine took its name from a white pine tree that stood here in 1893. Richard White suggested the name to satisfy government officials who requested one to make the post office a legal reality. The original pine tree was destroyed by lightning in 1897. Another white pine tree, symbolic of the town and commemorating the original tree, was planted July 4, 1970.
