On September 20th, 1863, at 11 a.m., Breckinridge's Division of Hill's Corps, under Major General John C. Breckinridge, fought here with Helm's Brigade under Brigadier General Benjamin H. Helm and Colonel Joseph H. Lewis, Adams' Brigade under Brigadier General Daniel Adams and Colonel Randall L. Gibson, and Stovall's Brigade under Brigadier General Marcellus A. Stovall. Adams' and Stovall's Brigades advanced from the north with the LaFayette Road between them, Adams on the west and Stovall on the east, and had reached this point by 11 a.m. The left of Helm's Brigade had been shattered by three unsuccessful assaults on the lines north and east of Kelly Field, while its right forced itself into a gap in John Beatty's Brigade, pushed part of it back to the LaFayette Road, captured two guns, and was then repulsed. Beatty, with portions of his force, first strongly resisted and then, with help from Stanley's Brigade of Negley's Division, checked Adams' Brigade, while General Adams was wounded and captured. At this point VanDerveer's Brigade of Brannan's Division, moving to assist Baird, emerged from the woods on the west side of the road, wheeled into Stovall's Brigade, charged it, and drove it back, pursuing it to a point 100 yards north of Kelly Field. From this line, aided by the brigades of Grose, Dodge, parts of Willich, and Berry, detached from the divisions of Palmer and Johnson, Breckinridge's Division was forced beyond the Union left. It was then withdrawn farther and replaced by Gist's and Liddell's Divisions of Walker's Corps. Late in the afternoon Breckinridge's troops advanced again, took part in the last attack of the Confederate right wing, heavily assaulted Baird's position, followed that division to the LaFayette Road, and bivouacked in this part of Kelly Field.
