The John F. Weatherlys were among the first landowners in the area. In 1898 they started a ranch 25 miles to the north and ran a country store, post office, and phone exchange. They moved in 1915 to Panhandle. The 1924 discovery of oil on their ranch led to the founding of Borger, and they gave land there to every church and school and for a park. Weatherly, born in 1865 in Tennessee, was a church, civic, and Masonic leader and one of the organizers of Hutchinson County; he died in 1944. His wife, Maggie Marie Deahl Weatherly, born in 1875 in West Virginia, built Weatherly Hall at Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, educated missionaries and others, and endowed churches and Girl Scout work.
