Ashtabula Harbor Light on Lake Erie is the city’s harbor lighthouse and the third light to mark the harbor. The first, built in 1836, was a wooden tower lit by oil lamps; later harbor changes brought a second light on the west pier. The present lighthouse emerged from harbor improvements in 1905 and was moved and enlarged in 1915 on a concrete crib at the end of the north breakwater, with steel and iron construction, keeper quarters, and a fourth-order Fresnel lens. It survived ship collision and severe ice, remained the last staffed lighthouse on the Great Lakes until automation in 1973, and has since undergone preservation and restoration.
