Newporte crater
Science & Tech
Newporte crater is a buried meteorite impact structure in North Dakota, United States, about 3.2 kilometers wide and estimated to be less than 500 million years old, from the Cambrian period or later. Because it is not exposed at the surface, it does not appear as a visible crater on the land. Its importance lies in preserving evidence of an ancient impact event hidden beneath the landscape, revealing a chapter of the region’s geology that cannot be seen from the ground.
