The 32d Illinois Infantry, part of the 1st Brigade under Williams, 4th Division under Hurlbut, Army of the Tennessee, was commanded by Col. John Logan, who was wounded. On April 6, 1862, it advanced in line of battle through this field to the timber, then fell back to this position and engaged the enemy from about 9.30 to 11.30 a.m., when it moved to the left and rear of the 41st Illinois. In the battle, the regiment lost 3 officers and 36 men killed, 6 officers and 108 men wounded, and 5 men missing, for a total of 158.
