Fortification Range Wilderness is a 30,656-acre wilderness area in eastern Nevada, about 50 miles southeast of Ely, administered by the Bureau of Land Management. It protects the Fortification Range, a low mountain chain about 13.5 miles long made almost entirely of volcanic material. The landscape shifts from gentle ridges and broader forested slopes to a harsher northern end marked by steep terrain, sheer cliffs, and rocky outcrops. Its varied vegetation includes ponderosa pine, pinyon pine, juniper, aspen, and cottonwood, while wildlife includes mule deer, antelope, mountain lion, and raptors. The area supports recreation such as hiking, camping, fishing, hunting, and horseback riding.
