Lucile Ellerbe Godbold won an Olympic gold medal in 1922 in Paris, France, while a student at Winthrop College. She was the first woman in the South Carolina Athletic Hall Of Fame and was an outstanding educator at Columbia College. The daughter of William Asa and Lucie Ellerbe Godbold of Estill, South Carolina, formerly of Marion, South Carolina, "Miss Ludy" was born on May 31, 1900, at the Godbold place in Marion County.
