Guilford Courthouse National Military Park in Greensboro, North Carolina, preserves the site of the Battle of Guilford Court House, fought on March 15, 1781, an engagement that opened the campaign leading toward American victory in the Revolutionary War. Although the British held the field, their severe losses helped bring about surrender at Yorktown seven months later. Preservation began through David Schenck’s efforts in the late 19th century and led to creation of the park in 1917. Early commemorative choices and limited research complicated interpretation, but later National Park Service study revised understanding of the battle. The park is now both a historic landscape and an active urban park.
