Lindenwald, in New York’s Hudson Valley near Kinderhook, was the estate and longtime home of Martin Van Buren, the eighth president of the United States. He bought the thirty-six-room mansion and about one hundred twenty-five acres in 1839, moved there in 1841 after losing reelection, and lived there until his death in 1862. The property was both a family residence and a working farm, housing his four living sons as well. Before Van Buren owned it, Washington Irving wrote much of A History of New York and Sketch Book there. Lindenwald also remained politically important, serving as the base for Van Buren’s 1844 and 1848 presidential campaigns.
