Formerly called La Chapelle, Abbeville was founded in 1843 by Father Antoine Desire Megret, a native of Abbeville, France, on land purchased from Joseph LeBlanc. It was incorporated by the state in 1850 and became the parish seat of Vermillion in 1845. Abbeville is home of the Louisiana Dairy Festival.
