During the Civil War, Confederate irregular troops operated in western Kentucky as Partisan Rangers under Brig. Gen. Adam R. Johnson, fighting skirmishes and disrupting Union communications and supply lines. Among the Hopkins Countians who served were two brothers from Hanson, James Waller, who was killed, and J.S. Waller, who later urged reconciliation.
