James Bonner Rogers served as Freestone County sheriff in 1872 during a lawless era. After a deputy was shot in hot pursuit, he pursued several horse thieves alone, but was later shot from ambush by two strangers, supposedly the vengeful thieves. He died, leaving a widow and three children.
