Military
3
On April 8, 1865, at the South Side Railroad station near this site, units of Sheridan’s Union cavalry under Gen. Geo. Custer captured three trains unloading supplies for the Army of Northern Virginia. Significant for its relationship to Gen. Robert E. Lee’s surrender at Appomattox Court House, the action also marked the last strategic use of rail by Confederate forces.
