Glorieta Pass Battlefield in northern New Mexico preserves part of the ground where the Battle of Glorieta Pass was fought on the Santa Fe Trail from March 26 to 28, 1862. The battle arose from a Confederate drive into the Southwest after success at Valverde and an advance to Santa Fe, with Fort Union as the next objective. Union forces included Colorado volunteers raised by William Gilpin and New Mexican volunteers led by Manuel Chaves. Although the fighting was tactically mixed, destruction of the Confederate supply train forced a retreat to Texas and ended Confederate hopes of severing the West from the Union. The surviving battlefield remains only partly preserved and protected.
