The memorial is dedicated to all men and women who served in the armed forces of the United States of America and calls on those who pass beneath the flag to remember the sacrifice of life and treasure that has kept it aloft, unstained and beautiful against the sky. In Canton, South Dakota, during the bicentennial dedication of 1776—1976, it was also dedicated to the dead, to the living, and to those who would come after for their service to God and country.
