Around 1944, as wartime training accelerated, Moton Field became a very busy place. Between the two hangars, aircraft were refueled from one of six fuel tanks that remain in the ground nearby. Planes needing maintenance taxied to the hangar. Flight instructors, cadets, mechanics, and other personnel were everywhere doing their jobs, and a windsock over Hangar No. 1 helped cadets determine which direction to come in for a landing.
