In Leesburg, Virginia, this property served the Methodist church from about 1770 to 1900 and is the earliest known Methodist-owned church site in the United States. Its history began on May 11, 1766, when Nicholas Minor deeded a half acre to Methodist convert Robert Hamilton for use only as a church or meeting house and graveyard, with the deed delivered to members of the Methodist society in 1768. A soft-stone building rose soon after, later replaced and enlarged. In the late 1840s, a mixed-race congregation split over slavery, prompting a legal fight that ended in a court-ordered sale in 1897. The church was demolished around 1900.
