Beavertail Lighthouse stands at the southern tip of Conanicut Island in Jamestown, Rhode Island, marking the entrance to Narragansett Bay and guiding vessels through the East Passage. The headland had navigational importance by the early 1700s, and a wooden tower built here in 1749 became the third lighthouse established in the Thirteen Colonies. After that light burned and a replacement was later destroyed by retreating British forces during the American Revolutionary War, the present granite tower was built in 1856. Beavertail later served in fog-signal testing, passed to the United States Coast Guard in 1939, and was automated, restored, and opened to the public in 1989.
