Colonel John Griffith (1831-1889) was a Confederate officer in the Civil War. At the war’s end he learned that the women and children of his family had fled from Arkansas to Texas in an open wagon drawn by a milch cow and a one-eyed mule. The missing family members were found in 1866 when the mule was recognized near the courthouse in Comanche and two Griffith boys mounted him. Griffith settled at Buffalo Gap, helped organize Taylor County, moved to Kimble County in 1878, and had much property and great influence. He was an example of the leaders who came to Texas after the war to make a new start and became outstanding citizens.
