The Pencader Hundred area offers a wide range of parks, recreation, theater, dining, sports, historic sites, museums, and libraries for residents and visitors. Public parks include Lum's Pond State Park on Howell Road, with picnic areas, playgrounds, fishing, canoeing, walking trails, open fields, riding trails, stables, dog training areas, and a flying field for model aircraft hobbyists; Glasgow Regional Park on Route 40, with a walking trail, skateboarding facilities, a sledding hill, a water feature, ball fields, an amphitheater, and open sports fields; and Iron Hill Park on Old Baltimore Pike, where Native American artifacts have been found in a 300-acre natural area once used for open pit mining. Cultural offerings include the community-based Chapel Street Theater, University of Delaware plays, a multiplex theater in Peoples Plaza, and many restaurants, including the Glass Kitchen, a Route 40 landmark since 1950 that retains its mid-century character. Local sports organizations provide baseball, softball, and soccer, while the University of Delaware hosts collegiate games throughout the academic year. Historic structures in the area include homes, churches, businesses, farms, and sites such as the Cooch Dayett Mills Complex at Cooch's Bridge, while preserved buildings adapted to new uses include the Iron Hill Museum, Mechanics Row, and the Buck Tavern. Museums and libraries include the Iron Hill Museum of Natural History, whose building was constructed in 1923 as a black school by Pierre S. duPont and now displays Native American artifacts and natural science exhibits; the nearby C&D Canal Museum in South Chesapeake City, Maryland, which interprets the 1824–1828 construction of the canal linking the Chesapeake Bay and Delaware River; the Newark Free Library; and the University of Delaware's Morris Library.
