The Allegheny Portage Railroad, the first railroad to circumvent the Allegheny Mountains, completed the Pennsylvania Mainline Canal and opened in 1834, creating the first direct route between Philadelphia and Pittsburgh. Known as "The Portage," it served merchants, passengers, slaves in pursuit of freedom, and soldiers from the Mexican War.
