On August 4, 2000, a train carrying Texas Governor George W. Bush, his running mate Dick Cheney, U.S. Senator Rick Santorum, and future Congresswoman Melissa Hart stopped in Wampum to greet approximately 500 people gathered by the tracks. Three months later, in the closest election in history, Governor Bush was elected the 43rd President of the United States of America.
