The Buttress Tree was 272 feet long, had a base diameter of 20 feet, and an estimated age of 2,300 years. It fell without warning on June 3, 1959, when the weather was clear and there was no wind. Sequoias lose their balance and fall when their shallow root systems are weakened by fire, erosion, or very wet soil.
