The Long Island Museum of American Art, History, and Carriages in Stony Brook, New York, grew from a small natural history display assembled by O.C. Lempfert into one of Long Island’s principal cultural institutions. Incorporated in 1939, it expanded significantly after Ward Melville acquired the former Stony Brook Hotel property in 1948 and supported new facilities, including carriage, art, and history museums. Historic buildings moved to the grounds became part of its educational mission. Renamed in 2000, the museum now holds more than 60,000 artifacts, including the largest collection of William Sidney Mount’s work and an internationally regarded collection of horse-drawn vehicles and related materials.
