Pawtucket comes from a Pequot-Mohegan and Narragansett word meaning “clear, open or shallow river.” Before English settlers arrived in the 1600s, the Pawcatuck River was a natural waterway for travel and trade, and in 1636 it became the official colonial boundary between Connecticut and Rhode Island, while also serving as a trading point and lifeblood of the community.
