Fort Mandan was the eighteen oh four to eighteen oh five winter quarters of the Lewis and Clark Expedition and was also the birthplace of the son born to Sakakawea and her French husband Charbonneau, interpreter for the explorers. The "Bird Woman" helped guide Lewis and Clark to their destination on the Pacific Coast. The original site, ten miles west upriver, is now in the river channel.
