Belle Isle Conservatory, formally the Anna Scripps Whitcomb Conservatory, is a historic greenhouse and botanical garden on Belle Isle in Detroit and the oldest continually operating conservatory in the United States. Opened in 1904 and designed by George D. Mason and Albert Kahn, it features a great central dome and five distinct plant houses for tropical, desert, fern, and seasonal displays. Long one of Detroit’s best-known attractions, it was strengthened by a 1953 dome reconstruction and renamed in 1955 after Anna Scripps Whitcomb donated 600 orchids, helping create the nation’s largest municipally owned orchid collection. Civic groups and volunteers have helped sustain it as a public garden landmark.
