Men from Ganges Township served in the Civil War as defenders of the Union from 1861 to 1865, with volunteers listed in cavalry, infantry, artillery, engineering, and naval service. The names include many who served in Michigan units, especially the 13th Infantry and several cavalry regiments, as well as others in units from New York, Illinois, Indiana, and Wisconsin, and in the U.S. Navy. In 1898, the Woman's Soldiers Monument Society of Ganges erected this record of the township's volunteers, and the rear panel also identifies Jacob G. Fry Post No. 46.
