Made in Philadelphia in 1839 for the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal Company, this diving bell was used as an air chamber for workmen making underwater repairs on lock gates. The canal opened in 1829 and operated until the sea level canal opened at Reedy Point in 1927. The diving bell was restored in 1961 by the Delaware City Community Park District.
