Dia Chelsea is a New York City art museum operated by the Dia Art Foundation, whose mission since 1974 has been to support ambitious projects that most museums and galleries could not accommodate. Opening in Chelsea in 1987 as the neighborhood’s first art museum, it established a model of spacious, long-term exhibitions devoted to one or two artists, alongside public programs. Its original warehouse spaces and later site-specific works by artists including Dan Graham, Dan Flavin, and Joseph Beuys reflected that focus on scale and duration. After growth, closure, and expansion along West 22nd Street, the museum reopened in a consolidated complex, continuing Dia’s commitment to giving artists room, time, and resources.
