The Cathedral of Saint Paul, on Cathedral Hill above downtown Saint Paul, is the Roman Catholic cathedral of Saint Paul and co-cathedral of the archdiocese with Minneapolis. Opened in 1915 as the fourth cathedral of its name, it grew from the city’s earliest Catholic chapel, dedicated in 1841 in the settlement once called Pig’s Eye, and became a National Shrine of the Apostle Paul in 2009. Designed by Emmanuel Louis Masqueray in a Classical Renaissance style, it is distinguished by its great copper dome, Greek cross plan, mosaics, stained glass, statues, and chapels honoring immigrant communities. Long central to Minnesota’s religious and public life, it remains a major landmark.
