Lord Fairfax granted this property to Captain Jeremiah Smith in 1762. Jeremiah Smith, one of the first settlers of this valley, was known as "The Pioneer" and was personally known by George Washington. He and his descendants are buried here. This 300 acre parcel and the adjoining 200 acre parcel across Highway 50 were placed into conservation and donated in 2008 in honor of William E. Smith, the last direct descendant of Jeremiah Smith to own this property.
