The Hemenway tree, a landmark bald cypress at Corkscrew, has sheltered countless raptors and wading birds over the centuries and supports swamp life with bromeliads, resurrection fern, Virginia creeper, and a strangler fig despite storms and drought. It shaded the earliest visitors to Corkscrew's boardwalk after that walkway was first built in 1956. It honors Boston conservationist Harriet Hemenway, who led the movement to end the fashion of wearing decorative birds and feathers on hats and clothing, helped persuade lawmakers to pass the Lacey Act of 1900 restricting trade in wild animals, and, with the National Audubon Society, promoted the Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1918, a powerful protection for wild birds.
