The Carrollton Bridge
Transportation
5
The Wabash and Erie Canal authorities built the first bridge here in 1844 to accommodate the canal’s only main line crossing of the Wabash River. Its superstructure consisted of five fixed timber spans and one draw span, and a walkway on the west side carried a track for a small mule-powered tramcar that towed canal boats to the opposite shore.
