With more than 15 mines, Montgomery County was a major part of North Carolina's "Gold Region" during the 1800s and early 1900s. An estimated 1.2 million troy ounces of gold were mined from the region. When the town of Troy first paved its streets in 1922, traces of gold were found in the gravel used for the subsurface.
