The Denver and Rio Grande Railroad San Juan Extension and the Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad were recognized by the National Park Service and the United States Department of the Interior for their national significance and exceptional value in illustrating the history of the United States, including designation as a National Historic Landmark and placement on the National Register of Historic Places under the Historic Sites Act of 1935 and the Historic Preservation Act of 1966.
