The Alloway Creek Watershed encompasses approximately 3,096 acres of wetland and upland edge in Elsinboro and Lower Alloway Creek Township, Salem County, following the north side of Alloway Creek from Hancocks Bridge to its mouth at the Delaware River and along the river edge past Elsinboro Point to Fort Elfsborg-Salem Road. PSEG has worked there to control invasive Phragmites, locally called foxtail, which had choked out more beneficial marsh plants, while restoration has allowed native grasses to reestablish naturally and tidal flow to bring fish, shellfish, and other aquatic life back into the site, also supporting shorebirds and migratory waterfowl. The area also has a long human history: Native Americans called it Wootsessungsing; in 1643 Johann Printz, governor of New Sweden, established Helsingborg or Fort Elfsborg nearby; and John Fenwick's arrival in 1675 brought English domination to the region. Early settler houses remain, including the Abel and Mary Nicholson House, a 1722 patterned-end brick house later named a National Historic Landmark in March 1999, and the Hancock House in Hancocks Bridge is known for its role in the Revolutionary War. Portions of the site were once diked and farmed, with meadow bank companies helping maintain dikes, and in the twentieth century hunting and trapping were major uses, including on Rich or Eagle Island. The site is part of PSEG's Estuary Enhancement Program, which restores, enhances, and preserves more than 20,000 acres of wetland and adjacent uplands in the Delaware Estuary to expand spawning and nursery habitat and food sources for fish and other aquatic life, helping increase the estuary's aquatic production and biodiversity, while conservation protection and public access features help preserve the area as a haven for wildlife and an integral part of the Delaware River Estuary.
