On April 27, 1865, the steamship Sultana blew up on the Mississippi River while returning 2,400 prisoners of war, causing the loss of over 1,800 lives in the greatest maritime disaster in U.S. history. Among the dead were 73 men of the 102nd Ohio Volunteer Infantry, a regiment formed in Mansfield, Ohio and mustered in on September 6, 1862; this regiment lost more men than any other infantry regiment in the disaster.
