At Pokagon, a toboggan slide began in 1935 when young men of Civilian Conservation Corps Company 556, stationed nearby in an 11-building camp, built a single-track run for their own recreation with curves like a bobsled course. In 1936 the track was straightened to increase speed, and in 1938 the CCC built a 20-foot tower as the park began offering the ride as an amenity. A second track was added in 1941. In 1971 refrigerated tracks made operation possible regardless of weather, and before refrigeration, ice blocks were cut from Lake James and shaved to fit the track. In 1974 a 30-foot tower and new tracks were installed, with a rustic warming hut below and behind the tower converted from the old campers store. In 1986 a new rental and warming center was built along with new tracks. The slide has reached a record speed of 42 mph, with a vertical drop of 90 feet over a quarter-mile track in a 20- to 30-second ride.
