On January 1, 1880, the Southern Minnesota Railroad claimed the $10,000 prize offered by Flandreau businessmen as the first railroad to reach Flandreau. The depot was built that summer on Wind Street. It was later moved and restored as one of Flandreau's three Lasting Legacy Projects celebrating the Centennial of South Dakota's Statehood in 1989.
