The Michelson Museum of Art in Marshall, Texas, was founded to keep Leo Michelson’s work on public view, reflecting his concern that a large institution might leave much of it in storage. After his death in 1978, his wife Janine, encouraged by Wendy Russell Reves, chose Reves’s birthplace of Marshall as the museum’s home. It was established with a large permanent collection of Michelson’s paintings, drawings, and prints. The museum later broadened its scope through major additions, including the Kronenberg collection of twentieth-century American art and the Ramona and Jay Ward Collection of African Masks, becoming both a center for Michelson’s art and a wider survey of artistic traditions.
