The Reynoldsville Post Office stood here from April 5, 1898 to April 20, 1913, and the community was named by the Post Office Department in honor of Reuben Arthur Reynolds, its first postmaster. A pioneer environmentalist, Reynolds practiced forestry management and soil conservation on several thousand acres of land and built the post office directly across the road in front of his home. After the post office was discontinued, the building was used as a jail before it was razed about 1945. Reynolds was born in Clinton, North Carolina, on November 4, 1848, moved with his family to Decatur County, Georgia, in 1850, enlisted in the Confederate Army at age 15, and served as a private in Company I, Third Regiment Infantry, Georgia Reserves. A prominent agriculturist, he was married four times, fathered twelve children, taught them to be frugal and faithful stewards of the land, was an active and faithful member of Bethany Baptist Church, and died on September 21, 1922, after which he was interred in Bethany Cemetery.
