Built in 1857 near Covington, Virginia, Humpback Covered Bridge spans Dunlap Creek on the old James River and Kanawha Turnpike. It is the state’s oldest remaining covered bridge and one of the few surviving American bridges with a pronounced arched rise at the center, built to better withstand floodwaters after several earlier bridges at the site had failed. Constructed of white oak and hickory with hand-hewn timbers, heavy plank decking, and handmade honey locust pins, it retains most of its original 1857 support timbers and decking. It carried traffic until 1929 and was later preserved as a historic site, becoming a National Historic Landmark in 2012.
