Portavant Mound, on Snead Island in Emerson Point Preserve near Palmetto, Florida, is a significant Indigenous earthwork in the Tampa Bay region associated with the Safety Harbor culture, which flourished from about 900 to 1725. One of fifteen or more temple mounds identified around Tampa Bay, it includes a main flat-topped mound and a lower adjoining platform built from soil mixed with midden debris, evidence of long-term settlement and ceremonial activity. Distinctive for lacking a ramp to its summit, the site was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places in 1994 and has undergone preservation efforts to protect it from erosion, looting, foot traffic, and invasive vegetation.
